ARE YOU READY FOR THE FIREWORKS SEASON?

Top tips for Happy Pets on Bonfire Night

  1. Start preparations early, don't wait for him to become distressed.
  2. Close curtains, put the lights on and play music to disguise noises and flashes.
  3. Don't overly sympathise with him, he is more likely to perceive this as approval of his nervous behaviour.
  4. Provide a 'den' or safe place in which he can retreat.
  5. Engage him in energetic exercises throughout the day so that he is physically tired and more likely to relax in the evening.
  6. Stuffed Kong toys or chews may provide a useful distraction.
  7. The homeopathic remedy Anxiety and a DAP/Feliway diffuser will help him stay calm and relaxed.
  8. Be calm yourself. If you are stressed he is more likely to be stressed.
  9. Try to keep to his usual routine as familiarity tends to improve confidence.
  10. Work on a behaviour modification programme for next year! The Sounds CD for Behaviour Therapy is ideal.
