Top tips for Happy Pets on Bonfire Night
- Start preparations early, don't wait for him to become distressed.
- Close curtains, put the lights on and play music to disguise noises and flashes.
- Don't overly sympathise with him, he is more likely to perceive this as approval of his nervous behaviour.
- Provide a 'den' or safe place in which he can retreat.
- Engage him in energetic exercises throughout the day so that he is physically tired and more likely to relax in the evening.
- Stuffed Kong toys or chews may provide a useful distraction.
- The homeopathic remedy Anxiety and a DAP/Feliway diffuser will help him stay calm and relaxed.
- Be calm yourself. If you are stressed he is more likely to be stressed.
- Try to keep to his usual routine as familiarity tends to improve confidence.
